The renewal trap

Cheap to buy. Expensive to keep.

Every registrar pays the same wholesale cost for a .com — $10.44 ($10.26 to Verisign + $0.18 ICANN fee) — and Cloudflare sells at exactly that, with zero markup. Everything above it is markup, and the markup hides in the renewal, not the signup. Only one registrar totals below it: Spaceship, Namecheap's budget brand, charges $10.18 all-in because it subsidises the difference as a loss-leader.

⚠️ The trap registrars

First year vs. renewal for a single .com — the gap is the business model.

GoDaddy$22.99
Namecheap$18.48
Hostinger$19.99

✅ The flat-price registrars

Year one costs the same as year ten. No teaser, no ambush at renewal time.

Porkbun$11.08
Spaceship$10.18

How RenewPings works

Three steps between you and a cheaper renewal

1. Find your real renewal price

Ignore the first-year teaser. The renewal price hiding in your registrar's dashboard is the number that bills you every year — that's the one to beat.

2. Compare all 8 registrars

Our table lines up first-year, renewal and true 5-year costs side by side — checked and dated — so the cheapest home for your domain is obvious at a glance.

3. Transfer once, save yearly

A transfer adds a full year at the new registrar's lower price — you lose nothing you've paid for, and every future renewal stays cheap.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight

Why is my domain renewal so much more expensive than the first year?

Registrars sell first years at or below cost to win you, then make the money back on renewals. The wholesale cost of a .com is $10.44 (Verisign's $10.26 plus the $0.18 ICANN fee). Cloudflare charges exactly that — $10.44, zero markup — while GoDaddy renews a .com at $22.99. One registrar totals even less: Spaceship, Namecheap's budget brand, charges $10.18 all-in ($9.98 plus the $0.20 ICANN fee) because it subsidises the difference as a loss-leader — always verify the final total at checkout.

Is transferring my domain cheaper than renewing it?

Usually, yes. A transfer costs one year at the new registrar's price and that year is added to your expiry date — you never lose time you already paid for. Moving a .com from GoDaddy ($22.99 renewal) to Porkbun ($11.08) or Cloudflare ($10.44) saves roughly $12 every year, per domain.

How often does RenewPings update its prices?

We re-check every registrar's published renewal prices by hand on a weekly-to-monthly cycle — there is no automated price feed. Each check updates one dated price list, and the comparison table, price ticker and calculator all calculate from that same list, so the whole site moves to the new prices at once. Every table shows the date prices were last checked; always confirm the final price at the registrar's own checkout before paying.

What happens if my domain expires?

Your website and email stop working almost immediately. Most TLDs then give you a grace period to renew at the normal price, followed by a redemption period where recovery costs a large extra fee. After roughly 75 days the domain is deleted and anyone can register it — including competitors and squatters.

Do renewal coupons actually exist?

Rarely. Most registrar coupons apply to new registrations and transfers, not renewals — that is deliberate. The reliable way to 'coupon' a renewal is to transfer the domain to a cheaper registrar during a transfer promotion, which is why we track transfer prices alongside renewal prices.

Does RenewPings cost anything?

No. The price comparisons, the calculator and every guide are free. We are building the site to earn through advertising and, in future, clearly disclosed partner links — never by charging readers or selling their data.

The cheapest renewal is the one you choose — not the one that auto-charges you.
